Selena Gomez has long been an advocate for mental health, and in 2022, she plans to expand her efforts by opening her own media platform dedicated to the subject.
It’s called Wondermind, and it’s an online platform that aims to build a community around mental health and provide tools and services for people who want to improve their “mental fitness.”
Creating a routine and working through your feelings are key components of Wondermind’s definition of mental health. To commit to a daily practice, even when you’re uncomfortable, is what it means to say that “it works!”
Selena, her mother, Mandy Teefey, and Daniella Pierson, the founder, and CEO of The Newsette, collaborated on Wondermind. There was a lack of support and encouragement for people working through mental health issues in the digital world, and all three women had experienced this firsthand.
Selena states in the Wondermind introduction video, “I’m very happy about Wondermind because I want there to be a place of individuals coming together and recognizing that they’re not alone.”
Wondermind’s primary goal is to eradicate the stigma associated with mental health and mental illness and to recognize the courage of those who choose to be open and honest. We’re creating a whole “ecology” of mental fitness tools to help people improve their mental well-being every day. These tools will include daily mental health-focused activities, digital media including video and on-site content, podcasts, and even tangible things like a journal and an hourglass.
What Daniella Pierson, Wondermind co-founder, says in the video: “Your mind is genuinely like a muscle, and to train on it every single day, content and tools are required, and we’re so glad to give that to you all.”
Mandy Selena’s mother will host the Wondermind podcast, where she will interview “notable psychiatrists, athletes, and celebrities” about their experiences with mental health. Author and licensed therapist John Kim will be part of Wondermind’s “Committee of Mental Health Advocates,” which will also include licensed therapist Minaa B.
Selena has made numerous attempts to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. A frequent topic of conversation about the singer’s personal struggles with mental illness is her relationship with social media, something she’s discussed openly in the past.
As part of her Rare Beauty brand, Selena developed “Mental Health 101,” a wellness project and mental health fund for young people who are dealing with mental health issues. Soon after she revealed she had bipolar disorder, the organization launched a campaign to raise awareness.
Selena explains in the Wondermind welcome video, “I live with bipolar, but I don’t suffer from it anymore.” For this reason and others, “I’m overjoyed and proud of how far I’ve come.”
Also, Wondermind appears to be a program that cares about the well-being of others.
It can be a difficult thing to do, she says, but by sharing and opening up, we can help each other recover.
